2011 IGSA Rulebook
We've got some big events coming up. So its time to make sure your equipment and safety gear is up to scratch. All riders (especially new riders) should take some time to look over the 2011 IGSA Rulebook making sure all your equipment meets the standards. Both IGSA world cup events will be run under these rules.
If you have any questions about your equipment please don't hesitate to contact ASRA or the IGSA. The last thing you want is to spend all this money and turn up at the event only to find out your gear doesn't meet tech.
You can find a copy of the rulebook here.

Mt Keira Downhill Challenge & Newtons Nation
2012 is kicking off with a bang with the announcement of the Mt Keira Downhill Challenge and the confirmation of the downhill section of Newtons Nation. Organised by ASRA and sanctioned by the IGSA. Mt Keira sets the pace first on the 20th to 22nd of April for the first time.
Staged in Wollongong the Mt Keira track is 1.9km's of nice flowing corners, topping out at around 80kph, this minimal braking course is a lot of fun and will make for some close racing.
Newtons Nation is a whole different kettle of fish. Set on THE Mt Panorama itself in Bathurst, its shorter, faster and unlike anything you've ever ridden. It's immaculate surface is unrivalled in Australia and mixed with its challenging corners, its one hellova ride.
Newtons Nation also brings together some great Australian music acts and showcases heaps of other great extreme sports over the weekend of the 27th to 29th of April.
Registration for the Mt Keira Downhill Challenge opens 18 February 2012, costs $245.00 plus an extra $50.00 for each additional discipline.
Registration for Newtons Nation opens 4 March 2012, costs $245.00 plus an extra $50.00 for each additional discipline.

New Addition to BSL
It is my pleasure to announce some new additions to the event wrap ups section of BSL. To help crew see and understand race results better, the event wraps ups section will now include detailed race brackets and results from all legit events.
This new addition has allowed us to develop a ranking system for gravity sports from an old system used for decades in the surfing industry.
Endorsed by the SL Network these rankings will serve as a guide for luge crew to see where they sit nationally after attending legitimate events. All riders racing at any legitimate race events will be counted.
2011 event wrap ups include the Beat the Bastard Charity free ride with the official results from Bomb the Snowies, BSL Slalom Challenge Time Trial, Head to Head & Collingrove Cup.
Points have been allocated to all riders who raced in these events. These points have been collated to give the most accurate representation of Luge rankings in the country.
This new addition will help to continue pushing the sport professionally in this country. 2012 looks to be a exciting year for gravity sports with many events on the cards. So get out there and race and maybe you could be the next Australian number One!

BSL Slalom Challenge 2012
Its on again!!! After the success of last years BSL Slalom Challenge we have decided to make it an annual event. This year it will be held on the 14th of October.
The aim of the BSL Slalom Challenge is to bring together SE QLD's Lugers, G Bikes & In-line skaters for a fun day out. A Slalom event for Street Luge is a concept that has developed from numerous conversations during and after the Street Luge Training Days held at the same location each month.
Watching the riders coming down the hill each month (and having a lot of fun doing it), it became clear that "Why should the newbies get all the fun!?" So here we are.
This will allow riders who are new to the sport to expand their skills into a more challenging course and the regular riders a fun day out with the chance to win a trophy and some great prizes! Last year was a fantastic success, proving you can still have a ball on small hills and this year it will be even better!
This year will be a triple header, 3 events in one. The Slalom Time Trial. A Head to Head Duel race and a reverse grid grand prix style race around the entire track, all for $35 bucks!!!
This is a Legitimate event complete with Insurance, First Aid & Airwalls for your safety.
All in all though this event is about everyone getting together and having fun!!!
If you have any questions about the event please don't hesitate to contact me.
SEE YOU THERE!

Training Days 2012 Calendar
Happy new year everyone and welcome to 2012. It gives me great pleasure to announce the dates of all the training days for 2012. The past several weeks have been a very difficult time for us all, but we begin 2012 with a renewed determination to introduce the sport to even more people. Not just showing them how to ride but giving them a brand new experience, an insight into why we do what we do and a great day out.
In 2011 the Street Luge Training Days trained over 60 people, some now ride with us regularly, some are representing Brisbane at Australian races and placing very well. Some gave it a go and decided it wasn't for them however every single person who has attended the Training Days have walked away with a smile having had a fantastic day.
As the organiser of the training days and a trainer it warms my heart seeing the faces of people experiencing this sport for the first time. It is a constant reminder of how great this sport is. It makes all the effort, time and money worth it.
So if you have been talking about it, thinking about it, its time to walk the walk and do it! And there is no better place in the world to learn the sport of Street Luge, then at the Street Luge Training Days.
See you there!
Tyler Johnson.

Thank You
Last Saturday was the worst day of my life. Loosing my very good friend Sue Wickenden. I love Street Luge its a fantastic sport, but its the people that truly make it great. Sue was an amazing example of this, and last night, being with my luge family, proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Yesterday morning we fare-welled Sue and last night we celebrated her life, together. After being pummeled by a massive rain storm at G5 we scrambled to relocate to Carindale Sizzlers with about 40 to 50 people in tow. The whole night I saw the amazing quality of the people around me. I love everyone in the Luge family and I know Sue did too. I have no doubt that she would have been laughing her ass off as us, soaking wet, running for our cars. I don't know about the not so mature antics that ensued later on though haha.
Sue was one of my closest friends in the luge community, not just my business partner. I respected her and everything she did for the wider community and especially the gravity community. She will be sorely missed.
What occurred on Saturday was an accident which could have happened to anyone of us, whether it be riding or walking down the street. I will never forget Sue and I know she wouldn't want me or anyone else to stop riding. When I next take the hill I know she will be with me and I know she will be with all of us forever.
Another good friend of mine was kind enough to share a poem he wrote about Street Luge, dedicated to Sue. It encapsulates why we do what we do and the freedom we feel that makes life worth living.
Please take care of yourselves and each other through Xmas and into the future. Take the time to enjoy every moment. Life is precious, don't waste it.
But most of all, I want to say Thank You. Thank you to all the riders, your family and friends for being my gravity Brothers and Sisters. Words can never and will never be able to express how grateful I am to each and everyone of you for being there for me and each other, especially Ben, Brad & Andy through this difficult time. I'll never forget it, I love you all.
~~~Tyler Johnson~~~
Ode to the Absent
early in the morning
the sun not yet awake
awaiting my companions
gives me time to contemplate
this hill, she is a calling
she whispers quietly my name
my friends begin arriving
blood races through my veins
the sound of idle chit chat
as for our journey we prepare
the sound of back slapping
for this moment we're about to share
stretching all our muscles
bodies twist from side to side
emphasis on focus
for this beast we're about to ride
walking across the roadway
to the spot where we will leave
resting on our vehicles
we push off and begin to weave
warming up our wheels
to gain that extra grip
our speed begins to quicken
as the hill, we begin to rip
laying down completely
to gain that extra pace
keep it in your mind now
it's fun, it's not a race
complete auxhillaration
blood pumping through my veins
heightening all my senses
my focus will not fein
corner after corner
heart beating triple time
contorting my whole body
to pick the sweetest line
suddenly it's all over
cheering from all my friends
and plenty of back slapping
c'mon on, lets go again
~~~Steve Knudsen~~~

Feedback time!
Every 6 months or so I like to gauge how BSL is doing as part of the Street Luge community. Everything I do as the Brisbane Street Luge representative is for you, the riders.
I work hard to fulfil the BSL aim of making Street Luge information more accessible to new and current riders with a focus on safety and professionalism. Also helping to bring the sport to all those who want to get involved in it.
This is a great opportunity to voice any concerns, idea's or praise for what we do here. All feedback is appreciated and constructive criticism respected. All thoughts and ideas will be kept and will form part of any decisions we make to develop the sport in the future. Please tell us what you think we are doing well and what you think we can improve as a community.
If you have some feedback you would like to share, please fill out the feedback form here. All feedback is anonymous. If you would like a response though, please include your contact details in your feedback.

Get your 'Apply First Aid' Certificate
As with all sports, there comes a time when something doesn't go according to plan. Street Luge is no different. If you do this sport long enough it is inevitable that you yourself or someone you know will be injured.
The majority of Street Luge related injuries are not too serious but in that rare occurrence that it is, knowing what to do and not panicking could save your mates life.
Having a basic understanding in first aid will allow you to treat superficial injures and not panic in the event of a serious accident, helping stabilise the person until help arrives.
With the assistance of Queensland First Aid we have organised a great opportunity for Queensland Street Lugers to obtain their 'Apply First Aid' Certificate (HLTFA301C).
There are no pre-requisites required, no homework or workbooks. This 7 hour one day course provides students with a total understanding of basic first aid.
At the end of the training you will receive your certificate, a FREE first aid manual and a FREE first aid kit.
With 10+ people the course costs only $95.00. There are venues in and around Brisbane and one in Townsville. Not all persons have to go to the same office on the same day to receive this group rate. However, there will be an allocated day if you prefer to go with a group of people you know.

Happy Birthday BSL!
Can you believe it! It has been a year already! Our cute little project is growing up so fast! A year ago today we presented brisbanestreetluge.com to the world and what a year it's been. We started this site to make information about Street Luge more accessible to new and current riders with a focus on safety and professionalism. To give Brisbane riders a one stop shop for information and news about Street Luge related happenings around Australia, but mainly to get people involved and having fun in this amazing sport. And, I am pleased to say that we are as resolute in this aim today as we were when we first started.
I love this sport, and its because of that love that I put as much time, effort and money into it as I do. I want everybody to see how awesome this sport is and why we all do it. This sport isn't for everybody but for those people that love it, they find more then just a hobby. They find a family, A whole group of people that love this thing as much as they do.
It not just about Big Hills & Big Races. Its about getting out there and riding with your mates and having fun. It's the little things that make this sport truly great.
So be sure to come and join us in celebrating the little things at the BSL BDAY BBQ next Friday night the 21st at G5 under the Gateway bridge. Everyone welcome, bring your friends, bring your family and if you don't know how to get there just call or message me.
Thank you to everyone in the luge family who make this sport great. Here's to many more years! and see you on the hill soon!!!

BSL Slalom Challenge - Report
Last weekend the Nerang Cycle Centre was home to the Australia's very first luge slalom. The BSL Slalom Challenge invited Street Lugers, Classic Lugers, Standup skateboarders and other gravity disciplines to come and challenge their skills.
The aim of the event was to have as much fun as possible with friends. The smaller hill forced speeds down and focused on rider skill. Riders had to navigate the gauntlet of slalom gates as fast as possible, but slow enough to conquer the all or nothing 110 degree corner at the bottom leading into the finish.
Check out the full report complete with results, times & pictures here.

IT'S COMING!

This Sunday the BSL Slalom Challenge kicks off for a great day of awesome riding, racing and fun! This is a very new concept as usually luge pilots will race each other on large roads for kilometres at speeds of up to 100kph and beyond.
This event is very different, we bring the speeds right back with a smaller hill and a set of slalom gates. This really puts an emphasis on technique as you might be fast but if you miss a gate or hit a cone the time penalties could cost you the win. Most of these riders have never ridden under these types of conditions before. They will have to adapt quickly with only 3 practice runs before their 3 timed runs. This event will prove to be a challenge for even the best riders.
The BSL Slalom Challenge is a free event and is open to the public, we welcome anyone who would like to come and see what our sport is all about. It is held at the Nerang Cycle Center and starts around 9am.
More information can be found of the event website here.

BSL Slalom Challenge

The aim of the BSL Slalom Challenge is to bring together SE QLD's Street Lugers, Classic Lugers and Stand up skateboarders for a fun day out. A Slalom event for Street Luge is a concept that has developed from numerous conversations during and after the Street Luge Training Days held at the same location each month.
Watching the riders coming down the hill each month and having a lot of fun doing it, it became clear that "Why should the newbies get all the fun!?" So here we are. This event will allow riders who are new to the sport to expand their skills into a more challenging course and the regular riders a fun day out with the chance to win cash and prizes for all! But all in all the event is about everyone getting together and having fun!!!
More information here.

From Kozakov
It was the news we all hoped was wrong. Sydney rider Phil Champion injured during practice at the IGSA World Championship race Kozakov Challenge in the Czech Republic. His first race of the season; but alas it was true.
Phil sustained severe injuries to his leg in the crash. All of our thoughts are with him during this time and hope its not too much longer before he has healed enough to fly home.
Phil has put his experience into his own words in the European Assault Blog. Read More.
Phil will be out of action for sometime when he does return to Australia with extensive bills looming.
The Street Luge community is getting together to assist Phil in anyway we can but also financially. Shirts are being sold to help raise money for him.
Click here for more information on how you can help.
